Portraits in Healthcare was a partnership between the Ethics Resource Center of the American Medical Association Journal of Ethics (AMA), the Wellness Center at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the International Museum of Surgical Science, and Scottish artist and medical researcher Mark Gilbert. In June-August 2020, in conjunction with the AMA’s annual conference in Chicago, a curated exhibition of Mark Gilbert’s work (30 pieces from 5 collections) and associated programming was to be presented at the International Museum of Surgical Science in Chicago. During the fall semester, the Management Studio Team participated in research, ideation, and the design and presentation of a model for programming, evaluation, and/or curation. Following this process, students conducted interviews and engaged in conversations with the artist and all partnering organizations to understand the vision and goal(s) of the project. Students worked with the curator, artist, and partnering organizations to assist in: curating and designing the exhibition; developing public programs; and working with Mark Gilbert to develop a concept for an artistic, qualitative evaluative measurement tool for the exhibition. During the spring semester the student team managed the implementation phase of the project and created online programming due to pandemic-related closures and cancellations. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the exhibition is rescheduled for Spring 2021.
