The School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s (SAIC) Management Studio team served as creative partners from October 2022 through May 2023 for the Invisible Institute and Black Wall Street Journey Project. The SAIC team assisted in the collaboration between the two organizations in the production of the exhibition, Six Durations of a Split Second: The Killing of Harith Augustus. The exhibition has been installed at the Invisible Institute, available by appointment-only, in Hyde Park since 2019, and was intended to be moved to Urban Juncture at East 51st Street and Indiana Avenue in Bronzeville in October of 2023. The re-installation for a public audience and expanded programming brings Black Wall Street Journey and the Invisible Institute together for the first time to illuminate systemic racism, incidences of police brutality, and injustice for Black Americans across the City of Chicago.
Six Durations of a Split Second intends to educate viewers on the scientific and socio-political understanding of the concept of a “split-second” regarding police decision-making and legal consequences. It aims to spark dialogue by empowering viewers to engage with the harsh realities of anti-black police violence that generates the possibility for actionable change taken on an individual, community, and policy level.
During the two terms—Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 semesters—the SAIC team assisted the Invisible Institute and the Black Wall Street Journey teams through three key phases, starting with ideation and initial meetings with stakeholders to gather potential directions for the exhibition. The second phase involved venue research, project description writing, and identifying funding opportunities. At the end of the first semester, the group concluded with an exhibition toolkit and an exhibition proposal submitted to the SAIC gallery. In the third phase, the team focused primarily on the development of the exhibition, further expanding on the original toolkit and venue research, developing materials such as potential reference on care guides, transcripts, and synopses for the six video installations.
