In recent years there has been an increasing interest in measuring the impact of the arts and culture sector on complex and interwoven social issues such as education, social justice, health and wellbeing, diplomacy, environment etc. The Illinois state advocacy organization, the Arts Alliance of Illinois, is looking to develop a state-wide impact model that will be useful to local concerns. This project included developing and designing this initiative through researching and writing case studies and creating a design strategy for visualizing the data models. During the Fall semester, the MS Team worked with the Arts Alliance team to map a research study scope and process for the project. This work included determining the 3-5 research categories (arts and health, arts and the military, arts and public safety, etc.) and the research study process. The team then worked on developing the research/case studies and began to think about prototypes for visualization strategies. During the Spring semester, the team then built the visualization model in collaboration with the Arts Alliance.
